About 'southwest florida college ft myers'|You knew it was coming: Watchmen
The University of Florida has enjoyed much athletic success in recent times. The football and men's basketball teams each won two NCAA Championships in the past half decade. Additionally, both the Gator women's softball and men's baseball teams reached the finals of their respective championships this past spring. The college town of Gainesville and entire state of Florida are getting accustomed to winning. This is also true of the Gators' successful track and field program, led by rising junior sprinter Tony McQuay of Riviera Beach, Florida. The Gators are coached by Mike Holloway, who has guided the track and field team since 2002. Holloway has been named an assistant coach for the United States 2012 Olympic team and will work with sprinters and hurdlers. This certainly gives an edge to McQuay in competing for the USA at the London Olympics. A former high school football player, Tony McQuay was a track star even prior to his arrival in Gainesville. McQuay won the 2009 FHSAA state championships in his signature event, the 400 meter dash. His success has continued in college and now brings glory to the Gators' program as a whole. On June 11, 2011, the University of Florida scored a third place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. McQuay participated in both the 400 meter dash and 4x400 meter relay. He posted the top overall time in qualifying for the 400 meter sprint, with a 44.87 second run, and finished second in the finals behind Kirani James of Alabama. Furthermore, he anchored the squad's 4x400 relay and aided a sixth place showing in the finals. The month of June soon produced even better results for the Olympic hopeful. Competing at the 2011 US Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Tony McQuay shocked the track community by defeating former Olympic gold medalist and world champion Jeremy Wariner. Posting a blistering time of 44.68 seconds, McQuay blew past Wariner during the race's final 100 meters. The win has the collegiate junior very confident, as he attempts to earn a place on the US national team. McQuay told the Associated Press, "I want to break the world record. I've got my mind set on that." Michael Johnson's time of 43.18 has been the 400 meter record since 1999. If McQuay can continue his quest of approaching that mark, he surely will have a spot running for America in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Sources: Gatorzone.com, Ncaa.com, Espn.com.
